Why We're So Obsessed with this Halloween Bedroom Trend

Why We're So Obsessed with this Halloween Bedroom Trend

With over 1.7 million videos under #Ghostface on TikTok, your FYP is probably full of shirtless, muscled men in masks, or maybe that’s just ours - depending on you preferences I’m sure the algorithm will be delivering somebody hot in a mask, and if not, we can only apologise, as you might be missing out on one of the internet’s freakiest (and sexiest) Halloween fantasies.

This spooky season, it seems one thing is haunting our imaginations: masked men. Whether it’s Ghostface from Scream, a Michael Myers lookalike, or someone in a hockey mask or balaclava, we just can’t get enough.

So, what is it about a mask that makes us feel so... flushed?

The Mystery of the Mask

And no, we’re not talking about Jim Carrey in The Mask. We’d never kink shame, but that one might not be everyone’s cup of tea. Speaking personally, my obsession with masked men started with Gerard Butler in The Phantom of the Opera (2004) - probably the start of my love of a toxic relationship, but I digress.

With many of us currently loving a mask, our resident expert and multi-award-winning Sex and Relationship Coach, Gemma Nice, says it’s all about the mystery.

“When a man is masked, it gives us that sense of mystery as to who’s under there,” Gemma explains. “It lets our minds take over. We can build up a fantastical character in our imagination while they’re standing right in front of us. It’s not about who they are, but what they could be. That’s where the real seduction lies.”

It’s a fantasy that blends anonymity with dominance, and for many women, that combination hits hard.

“If a woman enjoys being more submissive in the bedroom, a mask gives the man this powerful, dominant energy,” Gemma adds. “It lets her safely play out her ultimate fantasies, projecting her desires onto this mysterious figure.”

The Science Behind the Seduction

There’s real science behind why this kind of fantasy feels so good. When we’re turned on by mystery, dominance, or roleplay, the brain releases dopamine and norepinephrine, chemicals that heighten arousal, excitement, and even intensify orgasm.

“Our heart rate rises, blood flow increases, including to the clitoris, and everything feels more sensitive,” says Gemma. “The mask fuels that excitement and keeps us on edge, heightening every sensation.”

When you can’t see your partner’s face, your imagination fills in the blanks. You’re not focused on who’s behind the mask, but what they represent — power, danger, desire.

“It’s the ultimate fantasy – mystery, dominance, and desire all rolled into one,” Gemma explains. “And when we can’t see the face behind the mask, we let our imagination do the work. That’s what makes it so sexy.”

How to Explore your Masked Fantasy - Safely

Before you dive headfirst into your dark, masked fantasies, Lizzie Lew, founder of OhMy!Gasm, says it’s vital to explore your submissive side safely and with confidence.

“Fantasy can be thrilling, but communication and consent are key,” Lizzie says. “If you’re exploring power play, agree on what’s okay before things get steamy. Safe words, aftercare, and mutual trust aren’t just buzzwords, they’re what make this kind of play feel freeing, not frightening.”

Start small: experiment with simple roleplay or light restraints before adding masks or full scenarios.

“The aim isn’t to lose control completely,” Lizzie adds, “it’s to let go safely, knowing you’re in good hands. That’s when real confidence and connection happen.”

If you’re feeling tempted by the idea of a masked man showing up in your bedroom this Halloween, whether it’s Ghostface, Michael Myers, or just your partner in a ski mask, you’re definitely not alone.

Just make sure you set your boundaries, have a safe word, and embrace the fantasy with confidence. After all, a little mystery never hurt anyone…
